Bucket List #4 Discover a Childhood Favorite

This week I discovered chocolate chip pancakes... yep, never had them before! Ohboyaretheygood! Probably a good thing I haven't known how easy these things are to make. I am SURE this would have been a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I am counting it on my bucket list for 'discover a childhood favorite.' Yummy? -YES! Deprived childhood? -NO! Happy I had parents that encouraged me to eat healthy and didn't let me eat junk for breakfast? -ALWAYS

Another Day at the Track

J and I spent the afternoon at the track today. It was his first time going and we had a lot of fun. If J had put money down on his picks we figured he would have been up $178. I didn't keep as close of track of what I would have lost/made, but I picked a few too. I still have a lot to learn, especially on reading stats, but it was still good cheap fun.

Playing with the camera ... and fire.

And that is my Valentine's Day tribute. No, we had a wonderful day. We spent the whole day together and went to Hula Boy's for dinner. While sitting across from J at the little table, I realized again just how lucky I am to have him!

Bucket List #3: Out with the old

This was not a fun and exciting bucket list item, but I felt it was necessary. I figured before I turned 30 I should clean out my closet. Get rid of all the stuff from high school, anything warn out, or anything that would not be age-appropriate for a 30 year old to wear. I am actually pretty good about not hanging on to stuff, there wasn't that much, only about 7 items. I think this was more of a mental purging. I do have to say that I noticed that my fashion has sadly not evolved much since high school. When I was a teen I spent a fair amount of time with my favorite cousin and her family. My Aunt J took me shopping a few times, and I think most of what I know about fashion came from her. You know as teens we never listen to our own mothers on that sort of thing (sorry Mom that I was one of those), but I will always appreciate the influence my wonderful extended family has had on me.

And the "in with the new" part of this... J took me shopping this week and helped me pick out 6 new tops. What a guy!

Trip To CA: Last of the pictures

Friends probably won't find this post too interesting, but I thought the fam might want to see these pictures. While in P.V. we drove past Nan's old house. It is Feb so things are bound to be less than beautiful, but I was still saddened to see some of the changes the new owners have made. First off you will probably notice that the garage has been closed in and turned into a room, and the rock facade. I can't help but wonder how they keep the new room from flooding. You will also notice that almost all the plants have been removed. The fruit trees and hazelnut bushes aren't there any more either. What really made me sad was that the big maple in the back yard looks to be dead now. You can see how the branches are all broken. If it isn't totally dead, I don't think it will be long. The other thing that made my heart ache was that in the back they ripped out all my great grandmothers rose bushes and put on a deck. It looks like the Cical Brunner and wisterias are no longer there either. It does look like they are keeping things pretty clean though, and that is good. I guess what is hard for me is that it just no longer is the secret garden that held all the magic a child could wish for. I again realize what a charmed life I have had.

We stayed with my aunt and uncle in their beautiful home. They were wonderful hosts. Uncle B even cooked up some pheasant that he had shot that day. I had no idea I would like it so well. I think he is just a master BBQ-er and can take even a tough wild bird and make it yummy. This nest picture is of their old pup. Every time I would walk by her she would give me this look. She wanted attention so bad but knew she was not supposed to beg.

When you think of Aunt J and what makes her happy, you can think of her cats. This is Benji, he looks and acts just like a little cougar.

I really enjoyed feeling the sun on my face a few months early this year and it was hard to leave and come back home to the rain. While there I enjoyed being out on their deck. They have a humming bird feeder and while soaking in the morning sun I snapped a few shots.

Can I just say how much I love my new camera?!

We took Nan with us and visited the two cemeteries where our family members are buried and cleaned up the graves. I walked around while waiting for Mom and Nan while they looked at headstones of people thy once new. I spotted this, I thought it totally looked like an old haunted cemetery fence.

This is Nan's little pall Fiona. Got to be one of the most spoiled cats. It is good Nan has something to dote on and is not alone.

So there you go. Pictures of everything but the family. Can you tell I am still super shy about taking people's pictures? Something I am working on.

Trip To CA: Gray Lodge

While visiting family in C.A. we did a little day trip to Gridley to drive through The Gray Lodge bird sanctuary. My mom, her brother and sister, my grandmother, and I all went. The reason for the sanctuary? Sacramento/central valley area use to have a lot of wet land, most of it is now being used for rice farming. Oddly I was better able to see the different kinds of ducks in the rice fields we drove past, than I could at the sanctuary. Here are my pictures from the day.

We ate a wonderful lunch at Black Bear Diner, and I really enjoyed just spending time with Mom's direct family.

Trip To CA: Moring walk along the Yuba River

The 1st-5th Mom and I spent visiting family in California. One morning my Aunt J, Mom, and I walked the trail along the beautiful Yuba River. Here are my pictures from that morning.
The morning sun glistening on the trees and river was a beautiful sight. Everything was washed in silver light.

It was fun to be back in lizard country. It brought back many childhood memories. I think at one point my brother even had one as a pet named Greased Lightning... am I remembering this right?

I think it was only a mile in and a mile out, but I had never been to the end of the trail before. I have always wondered if it just went on forever. Now I know!
More on the trip still to come. I had so much fun I am having to break it down into separate posts.

Bucket List #2: RED

Believe it or not, this is a first for me. I had my toes done for my wedding, but just french tips. I have never done any color, so this red was very shocking and it has taken me a while to get use to it. I kept socks on for a whole week when I first painted them. I think I do like it, but also think it is too much work, a waste of time, and probably unhealthy to keep 'em this way. J, my mom, aunt and cousin and a few people at work have now seen my toes. Sunday I am going to church in my new sandals. And now you have all seen my bright red toes! I am getting excited about doing this bucket list!

Some Day My Barn Will Come

(Not my image)

I was dreaming of the future. I pictured a lovely horse barn all full warm horses, clean stalls, and fresh smelling hay. And of course just then a barn cat walked through my dream. Yeah, I guess my ideal barn would have a few good mousers. I think I will name all my barn cats "Cat" in different languages. Here are a few examples of some I might use.

Chinese - Mao
Spanish - gato
Farsi - gorbe
Finnish - kissa
Gypsy - muca
Hawaiian - popoki
Icelandic - kottur
Japanese - neko
Latin - felis
Lithuanian - katinas
Romanian - pisica
Russian - kot (male); koshka (female)
Slovenian - macka; muca
Swahili - paka
Ukrainian - kit (male); kitska (female)
Yiddish - chatul or gattus
Zulu - Ikati
My own - C.A.T. (pronounced See-A-Tee)

And no, I don't plan on being a cat lady having more than two cats at a time, it's just a list to pick names from.
