Buzzzz

Last night when I was uploading the pumpkin picture I found this one on the camera. I took it when I was with Jenn, and I guess missed it last time I uploaded everything. The wasp was trying to hang onto the car windshield while we were driving around Logan.

Pumpkins '09

J and I enjoyed carving our pumpkins tonight. I stole Mae's idea and did a photo copy of the cover from The Man From Snowy River to use as a pattern. We got the pattern for J's off the net. The seeds are roasting in the oven right now... mmmmmm.

Solar Blues

(The images used in this post are not mine)
Night before last while laying in bed I heard geese flying over, then again today I saw a flock of them. Sadly, to me, this truly means fall is here. I have been in denial. No fall decorations, no pumpkins sitting by the door. I have been able to ignore the colors, the rain (pretty easy to do since it is always raining here) and even the yummy food. The geese however, I can't deny. I realized that my lack of acceptance is in large part due to the fact that I really never got to experience summer. Graveyard shift hardly allowed us to see the sun, let alone enjoy it the way we normally do. All I can say is that it is a good thing we aren't on graveyard shift during the winter or we really never would see daylight. I am afraid that, like a solar panel that gets too little sun, I am going to start loosing momentum before the winter is over because I was not able to store up on vitamin D and happy thoughts while the sun shone. I just need to come to grips with the facts, make the best of it, and start enjoying the season. I think tomorrow I will go get some pumpkins to carve, and try to make a pie with the apples that have been in my fridge for a month now. Goodbye summer, I will miss you dearly! I promise I will be waiting and watching for the first signs of your return. Sigh. Yes, I see you autumn. I guess I will try to enjoy you now before it's too late!

Swing Shift

Can I just say I love swing shift?! Even the name sounds so much better! I now know why they call it graveyard shift, and am so glad we are off it!

Visiting Jenn

This last Saturday I flew to Idaho Falls where Jenn picked me up. We spent the next 3 days just having fun. We started out with big plans of going to Boston, L.A., or Yellowstone, but we quickly found that every time we made a plan our hopes were thwarted. So what did we do? Stop planning and just had fun!

List of plans that fell through:
Hawaii= Full flights
Boston= would have taken 12 standby flights to make the trip work
L.A.= Flight full
Me fly in on Friday= Full flight went Sat morning instead
Go do session at Salt Lake temple= Temple closed for 6 months!
Yellowstone= 20ºF, Snowing, 6 hours out of our way, not sure roads open
Drove to Bear Lake= Went but it was so foggy we could not even tell there was a lake there
Cash Vally to see the colors= It snowed and all the treas are loosing their leaves so the colors were not as good as we hoped.

What we ended up doing:
I flew out Saturday morning and got to watch the sunrise as I went past Mt. Hood
I landed in Boise and got a quick connecting flight to Idaho Falls. We stopped by the temple and the falls to take pictures. It was beautiful! We also visited the largest (in sq feet) army surplus store. Saturday night we drove with Jenn's mom to Salt Lake where I heard live music in the tabernacle for the first time! W. Jenn's brother was singing in the UT all state high school quire and I got to go listen. It was wonderful! We also did a quick walk over to the visitors centerOn the way home we swung by the Logan temple (only about 5 min. from her house) so I could see it at night.Sunday we went to church, and then did a drive up the Cash Valley Canyon. It was beautiful, but I was told that the colors were not as good this year because of the early winter. We intended to go see Bear Lake, but ended up visiting the first snowfall of the year. It was beautiful anyway.
Monday Jenn showed me around Logan. We walked through a cemetery near her house and had fun taking pictures with her dad's 35mm camera with B&W film. Here are some I took with my digital camera. There were a lot of really neat headstones there. Some pioneers and influential people's family, like Alma Harris (nephew to Martin Harris). We even saw this old wood headstone that said Rest In Peace on it. I don't remember what year it was but it was super old... Jenn you remember the year?Jenn showed me more of Logan's beautiful sights. We even made a quick stop at her mission president's house. It was beautiful and I couldn't help but take a few shots.Next we went ridding. Jenn has been exercising and training horses for a sweet lady that takes in rescue horses. Jenn has been working a lot with a young paint named Cody lately, and I had the chance to ride him and enjoy all the hard work she has put into him. We spent the rest of the day horsing around. On the way to dinner (at any amazing Mexican restaurant- Jenn what was it called?) we stopped and took pictures of this barn.
In the evenings we stayed up and played games, made cookies, talked and watched movies. Tuesday morning we did a session at the Logan temple and then walked around the Utah State University campus and had lunch there. Tuesday we took lots of picture but I forgot my camera so they are all on Jenn's. When I get them I will post the best.
So, as you can see we ended up having a blast despite having all of our original plans fall through.
Thanks again Jenn! Love you!

Cuz Juls Asked

Family Tree 10 in. x 14 in.
Okay Juls, today you asked to see what I was working on while listening to conference. I started this one about a year ago, I am working on the second one so we will have one for J's family and one for mine. I am going to put black and white pictures of the family in the circles and their names and birth/death dates in the box below. It will only go back to our great grandparents though and will have no siblings on it. I am going to have them framed and hang Jason's and mine next to each other. As difficult as the cutting is I think getting the pictures and making them fit and look good might be even more difficult, so wish me luck.

Still Smiling At The Silly Things

In my posts I often mention things I find ironic, funny or just outrageous, but my posts have been so long I have not wanted to put in the stupid things and make them longer. However, I find that some of these thing I am still musing over so I thought I would share them all at once.
1) An odd group: An old man in overalls and work boots, a transient with his suitcase, and this girl carrying her cute shoes. As you can see in the picture the beach curves around and ends at the rocks. What the picture doesn't show is that the tide was coming in and there was nowhere for them to go. Everyone else was hurrying to clear off the beach before they got wet or trapped. Every time I look at this picture I can't help but come up with a scenario as to were they are going, and what they were doing. A photo shoot? Science experiment? A kidnapping? A drowning? And what is really in that suitcase?

J took this picture of Dad, Mom, and I same night/beach as my next story.
2) This one was really more sad than funny. While we were over on the peninsula we went out on the beach to check out the tide pools during low tide and to watch the sun set. While we were looking around we crossed paths with a lady. Dad talked to her and he said she was almost in tears because she thought all the little animals in the tide pools were going to die because the water no longer covered them. Dad had to reassure her that the water would come back and they would be fine. Besides, wouldn't that be a part of nature too? And what was she going to do about it if they were going to die? Was she going to start evacuating the sea life? Granted, it was a negative tide, but oh the irony! Here was this lady with her big peace sign earrings and earthy clothes that did not know about tides! I did not know if I should fall down laughing, or cry over this example of ignorance in society today.

3) While at the Mt. Rainier visitors center we saw this display. Yep, it really is stationary made from elephant poo. I know my bear scouts would love it if I had gotten them some. How would you feel about getting elephant poo in your mailbox? Oh there is just so much I could say about this product! 1) Really people don't you have something better to do? 2) Aren't letters supposed to be thoughtful and nice and not reek of a bad teenage prank or made of something you would hate to find on your doorstep? 3) Don't burn that letter! 4) I guess in our economy even the zoos are having to get creative in ways to cut back on "garbage" fees and to make money. 5) Oh don't you just want to work for that company? How much do they pay their employees and where do they find people that will work for them? 6) How would you use it? Send it to people you don't like and don't tell them what it is, or just use the envelopes to mail your bills in? 7) Can you get these styled for children's parties or wedding invitations? 8) I have heard you can eat an elephant one bite at a time, but I didn't know you could clean its pen one letter at a time 9) Does it take an extra postage handling fee to get the mailman to touch it? 10) I think the government has an unlimited supply of this. In fact they may be the largest suppliers.... Okay, I could go on but I will stop!

4) Also at the visitors center we saw this dumpster. I guess when you are dealing with the general public you have to cover all your bases, but really, what else are you going to put in the dumpster? Just to be sure, how about they put the same notice on there twice.I really think they had it labeled like this so you would use the recycling bins next to this dumpster, but I cut those out of the shot because I still thought it was funny.

5) These pictures I am throwing in because they make me smile just because it is so J.

In Tribute To The Little Things

Last week I made brownies, and since I don't see much of J I sometimes like to do little things that I think will make him smile. I figured the brownies would do it, but to be sure I cut the first piece right out of the middle. The next time I looked there were a few more random chunks missing. Well as you can see the process continued. As much as I have really hated graveyard shift I am glad we have been able to find ways to still have fun together... even when we don't see each other. And on that note I am pleased to say that this Saturday (As in tomorrow!!! YEAH!) J is switching to swing shift with Wednesdays and Thursdays off.
